Picnicking in the Parks

All of our parks have at least a few picnic tables, but some parks are able to accommodate large groups for picnics.  Ocean County Park in Lakewood, for instance, can accommodate up to 700 picnickers!  Beginning March 1 of each year, we will take limited reservations for large groups on a first-come-first-served basis, up to three weeks before the requested date, for picnics held between April 1 and November 1. A fee is charged based upon the size of the group, and proof of insurance is required for groups of 300 or more persons. (We do not take reservations on holidays.).  Beer in cans or kegs, wine in wine boxes are allowed by permit only in connection with reserved picnics. Only those with reservations may consume beer/wine, and only within designated roped-off area. No alcoholic beverages are permitted on any sports field! For more detailed information, Rules and Regulations, or a Picnic Reservation Form, telephone us at 1-877-OCPARKS or 1-732-506-9090, ext. 5954. Please be advised that all requests for a picnic reservation must be made at least 3 weeks prior to the picnic date.

Beaches

The Ocean County of Parks and Recreation has three parks which offer swimming facilities.  They are Ocean County Park in Lakewood, A. Paul King County Park in Stafford Township, and Berkeley Island County Park in Berkeley Township.  The first two have beautiful, freshwater lakes and sandy beaches.  The third is on the Barnegat Bay, also with a sandy beach.  All three beaches are staffed with lifeguards from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00p.m. daily from mid-June until Labor Day (conditions permitting).  The best part of all is that there is never a charge to use County facilities!  All three locations also have playgrounds, restrooms and picnic facilities.

What is a "County" Park?

Government services within the State of New Jersey are broken down into four groups: Federal, State, County and Municipal. National parks  and recreation areas, such as "Gateway National Recreation Area", fall under Federal jurisdiction; State parks as "Island Beach State Park" or "Barnegat Lighthouse State Park" are funded and run by the State of New Jersey; County parks are what these pages cover, i.e., Wells Mills County Park.  Municipal Parks are run by the towns or cities in which they are located.
